The Southern Cross Group’s proposal for Stewardship Support for Private Native Forests

The Southern Cross Group of forest researchers and practitioners calls for stewardship support for private native forests to reward and encourage private forest owners to provide environmental services enjoyed by the community. We propose an annual payment, to foster recognition that environmental services are ‘core business’. We propose incentives that are outcome oriented, transparent and easy to audit, that reward the maintenance of forest cover and the provision of habitat for threatened species. We offer suggestions and call upon a broader group of stakeholders to adopt, adapt and refine the general principles we have put forward.
